Banff - More than a Ski Town

I’ve always heard that Banff and Jasper are skiing paradises in winter, but the summer here is equally spectacular. We visited Peyto Lake, Lake Louise and Lake Moraine then topped the visit off with an epic hike up to Johnson’s Canyon Upper Falls. The vibrant colors of the each of these lakes set against the towering mountains are nothing short of breathtaking. Nestled amidst lush forests and rolling hills, the lakes here are enchanting making you want to hide away in the forest to become part of this spectacular environment. Crystal-clear waters stretch out like mirrors, perfectly reflecting the sky’s ever-changing canvas. Whether you're spotting shimmering ripples on the surface or watching the color ebb from clear as glass to 50 shades of blue, these lakes offer a serene escape. Interestingly each lakes distinctive vibrant turquoise color is caused by finely ground rock particles, known as rock flour suspended in the water. As glaciers grind against the bedrock, they create this "flour," which is then carried by glacial meltwater into the lake, where its particles scatter sunlight to produce the lake's characteristic blue-green hue.

Each lake boasts its own unique charm: some feature sandy, sun-kissed rocky beaches perfect for lounging and picnics, while others are fringed with towering pines and moss-covered rocks inviting adventurous hikes and secret swimming spots. Hikers, tourists and boaters will delight in the calm, glassy expanses, ideal for a peaceful activity no matter who you are! (I will say that getting to these lakes is an ordeal. Be prepared to use the shuttle services available or arrive at 4 AM or after 4PM to get parking. We got turned around at 8:30 am and sent back down the hill to figure it out!)
